We are part of Low Impact Fishers of Europe (LIFE), a wonderful association promoting, empowering and supporting small-scale fishers across Europe. Last week, we had the chance to participate in Make Fishing Fair Forum in Brussels where more than 40 small-scale fishers gathered to present our collective Roadmap to achieve fair fisheries to the European Commission. You can find the roadmap here.
We were joined by the EU Commissioner for Oceans and Fisheries Costas Kadis, Members of the European Parliament, and NGO representatives.
Small-scale fisheries are crucially important when it comes to preseving food security, biodiversity, rural livelihoods, traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. Yet, this sector truly keeps facing tremendous challenges, primarily due to the unfair competition against destructive industrial fishery and fish farming.
Even though the issues are political and systemic and not the responsibility of citizens, everyone can do their tiny bit to support small-scale fishers by buying fish directly from your local fisher :-)
