Traditional Seine Fishing in Koitajoki River Highlighted on this World Fisheries Day

Koitajoki is the only river in Finland where the ancient fishery practice of river seining is still practiced. This World Fisheries Day, Irma Kontturi and Reino Piitulainen, two of the few remaining practitioners of this endangered tradition, share their story of a changing river and the action they took to restore its depleted whitefish stocks. This article, published by the Endangered Landscapes and Seascapes Program, also sheds light on Karoliina and Lauri, two professional fishers of Snowchange, who have been learning the seining the seining traditions from Reino.
